Let’s Celebrate: Millennials Are Creating A Giveolution

According to society’s standard a millennial is someone who is lazy, self-absorbed, still living at home, and tech obsessed. Okay so they may have one thing right, we are tech-savvy. In a millennial’s defense with the recent tech boom we have seen great advances in medicine, education,entertainment and world peace.

Millennials get a bad rep. This “self-absorbed” idea of a young adult cannot be further from the truth. Millennials are volunteering and giving back more than any previous generation. Associated Press-GfK poll shows that people under the age of 30 say there is a “very important obligation” to volunteer. This shows that the trend isn’t stopping at millennials it’s only going to continue to climb as our society see’s we need to help each other.

The millennial generation is known for embracing diversity and differences. When managers were asked how important is volunteering on a resume 41% answered, “volunteer experience is equally as valuable as paid work” (LinkedIn). In this research they also found that 89% of millennials had volunteer experience. We are seeing a shift in corporate culture in such that employees are encouraged to volunteer with a hands on experience. Some corporations are giving their employees paid time off to give back to the communities.

Millennials are putting emphasis on causes rather than the organization itself as we have seen in previous years. In the past 5 years there has been an increase in the number of non-profit organizations sprouting up to help support different causes. It is no longer only the American Heart Association which supports a healthy heart but hundreds of other non-profits raising money to support causes such as this.

When millennials were asked why they volunteer their answers were—79% said it was their passion, 56% said to meet other people who shared similar interests, and 46% said it was part of their expertise according to a Case Foundation study done in 2013. Our generation cares about changing the world. We care about uniting nations. Most importantly we care about giving back!
